Information Sheet for Kings College London participants

We would like to invite you to participate in this original research project.  You should only participate if you want to; choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. Before you decide whether you want to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what your participation will involve.  Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish.  Ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.

Researchers have devoted decades to understanding what leads some people to be healthier than others. However, most people have only studied disease and disorder and failed to also address strengths and wellbeing. In this study, we want to look at what is going wrong and what is going right in different people from around the world. We want to capture the entire picture of what it means to be healthy and most importantly, track people to understand how they change over time. This is the first study of its kind to look in depth at people's wellbeing from around the world. If you choose to participate, you’ll be helping us to answer some of the most tantalising questions that our society faces today!

Once the project is completed, a final report summarising the findings and conclusions will be made available on the Institute of Psychiatry website. The findings will also be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires. The questionnaires ask about a range of psychological issues such as experiences you may have had, your coping style, and how you view the world.

There are no right or wrong answers. The questionnaires take about 25-30 minutes to complete. You will be able to complete them in your own time. Your answers will be kept anonymously, and will be identifiable only by a number, not by your name. The information collected will be treated as confidential.  This study is only open to King’s college students who are over the age of 18.

All participants  will  be given the  opportunity to go into the draw to  win  a £50 Amazon voucher.

You do not have to take part in this research and do not have to complete the questionnaires.  You are free at any time to decide not to continue with the study. However, if you do decide to withdraw, it will not be possible to withdraw your data as it anonymous.  If you complete the survey this will imply you have consented to take part.

The study has been approved by the King’s College London Research Ethics Committee, PNM/09/10-52. It is not expected that participation in the study has any risks; however, if you find any of the questions asked upsetting, and would like to talk about this, please contact the researcher.

Because we are also interested in how beliefs change over time, we are asking participants to fill in a series of five, identical questionnaires over the next 12 months. We will send out an email beforehand to remind participants to fill in the remaining four questionnaires. If you do decide to take part now you are not under any obligation to take part in any of the subsequent surveys.

The study is being carried out in conjunction with the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand who are funding the study. Anonymised data from this study will be archived and may be used by other researchers.

If you have any questions or concerns about taking part in this study or feel that the study has harmed you in any way please contact Joe Oliver, Clinical Psychologist, LEO Services, South London & Maudsley NSH Trust, 332 Brixton Road, London SW9 7AA, 020 3228 6940 (e-mail: joseph.oliver @ kcl.ac.uk).
